Cost of Living Comparison

Posted by Garth on Saturday, July 12, 2008

I was sitting around pondering the variations in cost of living here as compared to where I was living in Toronto. Here's a rough breakdown so that all my loyal readers can see how much money I'm saving and why the thought of getting a 9-5 job right now seems utterly ridiculous. Note that Rent, Internet and Cell Phone are monthly expenses.

Toronto

Thailand

Rent (or Mortgage + Condo Fees + Taxes)

2100

300

Internet

50

0

Cell Phone

200

10

Meal

10

3

Assume that I eat twice a day. So in 30 days my basic cost of living in Toronto is:
2100 + 50 + 200 + 10*30*2 = 2950
And in Thailand my basic cost of living is:
300 + 10 + 3*30*2 = 490
Now obviously I spend more than $490 in a month, and I'm not putting equity towards a condo or other investment... but I'm theoretically spending $2460 less in a month than I was in Toronto. Not to mention the improved quality of life, but that's a topic for another post.

Other savings of note:

Toronto

Thailand

Beer (6-pack equivalent)

10

3.60

Cigarettes

10

1.50

Massage (1 hour) - Legitimate you pervs!

90

i think you should also be fair and complete in your numbers there. You know round it out to include the full balance sheet.

If I factor in what I'm making (or not making as the case may be), can I factor in quality of life and responsibility as well? Cuz my QoL is through the roof and my responsibility is through the basement. I was actually stressing yesterday because I had to make sure to take my laundry to the laundry place today so that I can have it done in time to go to Koh Samui and Koh Phagnan for the Full Moon Party.

when you say "QoL", do you mean "hot Thai girls"?

That's definitely a part of the "quality" portion.
