The Death of Kraft Dinner

Posted by Garth on Friday, November 7, 2008

My buddy Gregg is coming to visit me in Thailand in a couple days, and he asked me if I wanted him to bring anything from Bermuda.  I told him I wanted Kraft Dinner, though I'd settle for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese since true KD is only available in Canada.  This began a heated IM debate wherein he claimed that KD and Kraft Mac & Cheese are the same thing.  I, being the KD connoisseur that I am, argued the opposite and told him that Canadian KD is quite unique.  Since he had nothing better to do, he called up Kraft's Canadian hotline and spoke with a product specialist.  It turns out that there were 2 unique recipes (Kraft Dinner in Canada and Kraft Macaroni & Cheese in the rest of the world), but that in March of this year (2008) they merged the recipes and made KD the same as the rest of the world, thus adding 17% more cheese.  And they have no plans to revert to the old recipe.  Ever.  So, without a chorus of angels and trumpets, or even an audible fizzle, Kraft Dinner died.

I will be in mourning for the next few days.  And likely again after I try the Bermudian Mac & Cheese which is now trying to lay claim to the KD title.

I've had it recently. I honestly didn't notice a difference.

I'm still mad that girl guide cookies changed a few years ago. Mr. Christie ones were way better than the current Dare.

I'm going to hazard a guess that you're not quite the KD aficionado that I am. In other words, I'm not surprised you didn't notice a difference. In fact, I'd hazard to guess that there aren't many people that would notice a difference... but I have no doubt that I would, given my KD-related background.

And ya, the old Girl Guide cookies were way better than the current ones.

I, too, LOATHE the Girl Guide Cookies made by Dare.

However, you can still get your fix of the original Christie-made ones, but by other names.

Golden Oreos taste exactly like the vanilla Girl Guide Cookies used to. And Fudgee-Os are the same as the chocolate Girl Guide Cookies used to be.

I keep a bag of each in the freezer. That's the best way to enjoy 'em!

The new change they've made to Kraft Dinner here in Canada is so awful. Really. I can't find anyone I know who can stomach this garbage.

Simply amazing that they made this change to a product people have loved for so long. The first time I tried it back when the change happened I thought I used sour milk or something.

Shame to hear they have to plans to change it back. People should be making a bigger stink over this to get Kraft's attention.

Thank you for sharing this information. I used to eat KD practically every day for lunch. But, a few years ago, they changed the recipe. I tried the new stuff a few times, and was completely disgusted by it. I haven't eaten KD since then.

I was having a discussion with a friend tonight, and we were trying to find out why they made such a stupid change to a (formerly) great product. We came across your blog, and it explained everything.

Thank you!

I'll never like KD as much as I did, I think I know why the whole grain tuff makes me puke. Whole grains don't go good with tons of cheese. Not at all.

And yeah, the new girl guide cookies will never be as good as they were.
