Crippled

Posted by Garth on Saturday, June 21, 2008

Last night I was laying low, minding my own business, reading a book. At about 3am I get a knock at the door (and I apparently hadn't closed my door fully so it inched open a bit, preventing me from ignoring the knock and pretending I was sleeping). It was Scott, an Aussie guy that lives directly below me. Well, it turns out that he had gone to 7-11 and locked himself out of his room. But his balcony door was open, which is also just below mine, and actually juts out about 5' beyond mine. He wanted to climb down my balcony to get into his room. Now, this wouldn't be a problem, except that he was blitzed. I don't even think he knew his own name. Let it be noted here that this has happened once before, but I was hanging out with Adam "Monkey Boy" Santi (aka Santino) and he climbed down instead of Scott, thinking that Scott would likely kill himself if he went. Well, last night Scott was in a similar state, but Santino had gone out. I was totally sober. I figured it was the right thing to do for me to climb down instead of Scott. Even though the voices in my head were telling me not to. But, I figure it's better that I'm injured (worst case scenario) than he dies. So I climb down to his balcony, but once I'm dangling above it I realize that the drop is about 4' from my feet to the balcony. More than I expected. But I'm dangling and there's really no way back up at this point, so I let go. Left foot lands square. Right foot... doesn't. Totally twisted my right foot about 90 degrees to the inside. Fuck did it hurt. But whatever... I let him into his room and came back up to mine. Was limping a bit and it hurt pretty bad, but it didn't seem like bones were grinding or anything so I figured no biggy. Went to sleep.

Woke up this morning and I couldn't even limp on it. Any weight whatsoever would cause unbelievable pain. And it was super swollen. So after sitting around for a couple hours trying to figure out what I was gonna do (and trying to get ahold of Santino since he has more experience with injuries than I do), I figured I'd just go to the hospital again. Hopped down the stairs and almost wiped out once, which would have been neither fun nor pretty. But I made it down. The girls downstairs were super helpful and one of them offered to drive me to the hospital. So, in 3 weeks in Phuket I've now been to the hospital twice. Anyway, they did x-rays and nothing was broken. Turns out it's just sprained, but it means I'm wearing a tensor bandage and hobbling around on crutches for a week. Oh, and my crutches are like the ones Jimmy uses (sans arm braces), which makes me look even more like a cripple.

So much for a judgement call!
Send pics of the man-on-crutches--

Also, I forgot to send sympathy--

ankle sprains are no fun...maybe it'd be easier to keep a copy of Scott's key than to climb the balcony all the time.
