Run Registry Key

Posted by Garth on Wednesday, June 18, 2008

I just learned something new about Vista 64 (and maybe 32 - not sure). In addition to the common HKLM\...\Run and HKCU\...\Run registry keys, there's a new one that they've introduced that had all kinds of startup crap hiding under it. This key is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Just take a peek in there and look at all the crapware! So in total there now seem to be 3 different Run registry keys.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry about it. For those of you that do, does anyone know of any other new Vista startup keys that might have speed crippling apps forced upon me?

Well the Startup tab of MSCONFIG does a nice job of pooling those locations together I have found. Also there used to (thinking Win98 times) be something under Shell. Will let you know
